The Slave Lodge building dates from 1679 when the Dutch East India Company housed slaves there, but its history as a museum began in 1966 when the SA Cultural History Museum opened. The building was renamed the Slave Lodge in 1998, two years before the museum and several other museums were put under the umbrella of the Iziko Museums of South Africa. The lower levels of Slave Lodge explore not only the history of slavery in colonial days but also during apartheid and human rights in general. Upper levels contain highlights from ceramics, silverware and Egyptology collections.
