Until 1874, this building not only served as city hall but underwent a serious number of facelifts throughout the years. Beginning with the construction of its Grand Hall in 1392 along the city wall, its style has changed with the times, going from a late-Gothic to a Renaissance to a Baroque and finally a neo-Gothic facade in the 19th century. It was here that Goebbels declared the Nazis pogrom against the Jews, leading to the infamous Kristallnacht.
