The City of Los Angeles renamed the Cove Avenue stairway as the Mattachine Steps in 2014 on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Harry Hay, considered the father of the gay rights movement. In 1948, Hay started a clandestine group called "Bachelors Anonymous" at a party at his home at 2328 Cove Ave. Two years later, it became the Mattachine Society, among the first sustained gay rights organization in the country. It spread to other cities, but the national organization splintered in 1952, spinning off a new organization ONE, Inc., which admitted women.and helped launch the Daughters of Bilitis's magazine.
