The Canal Saint-Martin is a waterway Napoleon ordered built between the Seine and the Canal de l'Ourcq. Part of the 4.7-kilometer channel runs underground between the Bastille and Republique Metros. In the 2001 film "Amélie," the shy waitress played by Audrey Tautou skips stones from an iron foot bridge arching over a studio version of the canal. The neighborhood after the canal resurfaces after Republique has blossomed with cafés, bistros, art galleries and off-beat boutiques. Chez Prune is the best-known bistro. The canal can be visited by boat or bicycle. The streets paralleling the canal are reserved for pedestrians and bikes on Sundays during warmer months.
