Galeries Lafayette is one of "the grand magasins" that changed how people shopped. In 1895, a small haberdashery was transformed into an elegant fashion emporium at the corner of La Fayette and Chaussée d'Antin. An ambitious redesign in the early 20th century created "a luxury bazaar" with Art Deco architecture to match the elegant goods. Not to miss is the iron staircase, inspired by the Paris opera and designed by Louis Majorelle, who also did the iron balconies. The spectacular Neo-byzanine dome was the work of master glassblower Jacques Gruber. While it is still a fashion emporium, Galeries Lafayette is also Paris's #2 tourist attraction - after the Eiffel Tower.
