The Checkpoint is where the movement between the East and West of the city was controlled by the Soviets after the building of their wall, and its guardhouse is still preserved on a concrete island in the middle of the street, flanked by costumed American and Soviet guards (a much utilized photo opportunity). The museum, first a small house built by an activist in the sixties and now a large building, is museum-worthy in itself, having not changed very much since its expansion in the nineties.
